A community-oriented facility, Berwick Hospital Center offers a broad
range of inpatient and outpatient services to the residents of Berwick
and the surrounding communities. With 101 acute-care beds and 240 long-term
care beds (in the Berwick Retirement Village), the organization takes
great pride in being able to fulfill a complete continuum of care by meeting
some of the more specialized needs of its community residents.
Outreach services are provided to the community by Berwick Hospital Center
Home Health Care, the Rehabilitation Service Department, the Cardiopulmonary
Treatment Center, Occupational Health Services, Emergency and Paramedic
Services, Patient and Community Education, Behavioral Health Services
for Older Adults and the Central Scheduling Services. Other distinctive
programs include specialized low-risk cardiac cathererization laboratory,
obstetrical and gynecological services, hand and spinal surgery and rehabilitation,
sam-day and laser surgery, Lithotripsy services, open MRI services, balance
testing and rehabilitation and aquatic therapy. Opening later this year
will be a fixed MRI unit. The only fixed unit in Columbia County.

- You can receive the same care in your home following surgery or an
illness that you would get in a hospital. When post-hospital rest and
follow-up of a patient's condition are called for, the Berwick Hospital
Center Home Health Care professionals can help.
- Health care services delivered at home are h elping to reduce health
care and insurance costs, and you will be able to recuperate at home.
Services are proveded by registered nurses, physical, speech and occupational
therapists, medical social workers and some health aides.
- You need not have been hospicatlized at Berwick Hospital Center to

- You can receive palliative care for the terminal pateint and emotional
support for the family and caregivers in your own home. Services are
provided by registered nurses, physical therapists, medical social workers,
bereavement services, spiritual conseling and volunteers.

- This program provides corporate customers with services tailored to
meet the firm's needs. These services include: DOT and NON-DOT physical
examinations, respiratory clearance testing, audiometric testing, vision
screenings, laboratory testing (blood and uring), hepatitis-B vaccinations,
tetanus booster, tuberculosis tests, influenza shots, and DOT and NON-DOT
drug and breath-alochol testing. Training and health promotion activities
such as smoking cessation, stress management, drug-free workplcae programs,
back safety, injury prevention and other wellneess-oriented programs
are coordinated and conducted by health care proessional who specialize
in these area. THis department also works closely with the emergency
room in delievering actue injury care and corrdrinating follow-up for
work-related accidenta. Post-accident drug and alcohol testing is performed
by certified personnel if requested by the company.
- Behavioral Health Services for Older Adults

- Behavioral Health Services (BHS) provides acute, short-term inpatient
care in order to meet the mental health needs of individuals age 55
and older. During an average length of stay of about two weeks, the
staff of BHS focuses on helping older adults to acheive their highest
level of functioning through maintaining or imporoving thinking skills,
physical health, emotional health and self-esteem. Treatment is provided
with a multidisciplinary approach by psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses,
social workes and recreational therapists. All of the resources of Berwick
Hospital are available as needed, including pehysical occupational and
speech therpists, dietitians, and laboratory and x-ray services. The
staff shares a strong commitment to respecting the dignity of older
adults while encouraging them to reach their fullest potential. Referrals
to BHS may be made by mental health and human service agencies, physicians,
hospicatls, nursing and personal care homes, family members and self-referrals.

- A hospital-based skilled nursing facility which provides nursing care
for long-term residential patient and short-term stays for rehabilition
and recuperation. Special services include physical therapy, occupational
therapy, speech therapy, social services and nutriional planning by
registered dietitians. Recreational programs, religious services and
chaplain serrvices also contribute to a unique, caring atmosphere.

A comprehensice rehabilitaion program for cardiac problems, deisng to
assist the patient in achieving and maintaining an optinaml state of
physical and phsychological health. The program includes exercise prescription,
monitored exercise sessions, patient and family education and ongoing
emotional support. A number of diagnostic tests are also administred
by the center including cardiac diagnostics, repiratory evaluations,
EEG, EKG's and sleep studies.

Berwick Hospital Center announced the addition of the industry's most
compact whole-body high-field magnetci resonance imagigin (MRI) system,
the INtera 1.5T from Philips Medical Systems, to provodehigh performance
imaging in the most open, patient-friendly scanning environment. Designed
with both patient and physician in mind, the system enhances patient
comfort without compromising image quality and clinical performance.
